Message: To all those who served

On Oct 6, 2003, a modern-day LRP from E/51st Inf (LRS)(ABN) was KIA in Iraq. He was Specialist Spencer Karol, a fine young man with a lot of potential from Woodruff, Arizona.  He was killed by an improvised explosive device while returning from a surveillance mission.  Two other men from his team were badly injured, but will recover.

His team sergeant, SFC Todd Galliand and I were able to attend his funeral in Arizona (both of us had recently moved on to other assignments).  He had a dignified, well-done funeral, with an honor guard and the colors presented to his mom by MG Marks.  He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Spencer Karol leaves behind his parents, several siblings, and a fiancé.

His loss was unfortunate, but I hear the unit moral is still up, and the men are soldiering on.

I thought that Vietnam Vets would want to know that the mission goes on, and so does the sacrifice.

Take care,

Captain Kevin Kelley

Robert Marietta, does anyone know him?  His name is not in the company roster, yet he lists his units as 11TH BDE, E51LRP, G75RGR years 68-69.  I was surfing the Americal website and I found him stating he was in the unit. If he was/wasn't in the unit, let me know. Gunner out.

I was on Team Oregon (1970).  Just finished looking at team photos.  Al Stewart on Team Moscow looks very familiar to a new guy on our team before I left country.  Does anyone know how to contact him?  Thanks.  Steve Lemire, K/75, G/75 (1970).  PS - I'll see you guys at the reunion at Fort Lewis.  PPS to Steve Johnson - can you post the photo of Team Oregon 1970 that I sent to you a few years ago?

My brother Kenneth Darrell Caywood, died of colon cancer in February 1993 in Topeka, Kansas.  He did his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., then went to Ranger Training at Fort Benning, GA., I believe.  During 1970 & 1972, his APO was Ft. Lewis (is this in Alaska or Washington state?)  I also believe he served in Vietnam during this time, but prior to his untimely death in 1993, Kenny did not talk about Vietnam, or what he did, or where he was.  We have some stories, but not confirmed.  Would his name be familiar at all to any of you, and where would I look to find further information about his service in Vietnam, or anywhere where he may have served.  His Ranger patch reflects "Airborne Ranger-G CO, 75th INF". Would there be any other information or direction you may lead me to find out more about his service to his country?  My home email is ronpat@htc.net or at work roncay@htc.net   My home phone # is (618) 939-1824 and (618) 282-4555 at work.  If you would have any info or reference to where I may search, I would really appreciate it!  Thank you!  Ron Caywood, Waterloo, Illinois

In late '70,I was sent to G-75 (tdy) as a GSR ground surveillance radar instructor and oper., went to the "mini" school at Chu Lai first, then back to the bush to set up OP's & LP's using backpacked elec. surv. equipment. I'd already been with Recon Co. E 1/6,198th,then with F & G Troops 1st Sqd./1stUS Cav.(sep),Chu Lai, so I wasn't a total FNG, but as a new "Ranger" even if only TDY, the gents of G Co. treated me well and shared all with me, (water, cigs, etc.) I could not convince them that radar would help them ,especially at night, since the equip. did not always work. SNAFU. So, after 3 months, I was sent back to Chu Lai for re-assignment, and I'll bet that my "new students" left the junk, I mean the army issue GSR "out in the rain" lol. As I left, a young 2nd Lt. gave me a G75 patch, having been one, if only a TDY. God Bless Us All I'm sending for the hat, t-shirt & a pin or 2.  Thanks.

I got rated from 80% VA SCD to 100% VA SCD in letter of 10/9/03 for unemployability with 50% VA SCD for PTSD and 60% residuals for cancer with 0% for malaria,0% for migraine headaches,0% for shell fragment wound, with a combined rating as of August now at 100% VA SCD for unemployability and that I am permanently and totally disabled; as I have been 100% twice since cancer surgery 1/31/2000 but they kept taking that away...now they can not. Keep praying for my beloved: Ms. Deane Arden Crabson-Williams-Klunk-Mize (70) AKA: "Bree Anderson!" As I believe she may have either had a post surgery stroke or a pulmonary embolism ( blood clot) from her extremities has produced a type of brain damage. She left me on 10/13/03 at 6pm to live with her youngest daughter in De Bery, Florida around Deltona near Daytona area of Florida some 80 miles from me. I do not think she will be back. I PRAY for a speedy and complete recovery both physically, mentally, and spiritually! I go to catholic Mass to pray for her almost every day since my medical disability retirement from my work as a DVOP job counselor for Disabled Veterans going back to 6/9/1986 with over 26 years as a State of Florida employee going back to 4/9/1973 when I started as a Parole & Probation Officer with the F.P.P.C. in Lakeland. My home# (863)701-0438 with HOME @ MARTINS LANDING APARTMENTS, 3520 Cleveland Heights Blvd., Apt.#229,Lakeland,Polk Co., Florida ZIP CODE 33803........ I miss talking to "Bob Simpson" terribly as part of my PTSD was from prison riots in the FLORIDA STATE PRISON SYSTEM back in the late 1970's and "Bob Simpson" could relate since he had done a lot of time in prison himself. I told him an inmate does his time but a Sergeant in a prison RENTS TIME! Either way it screws you up! This is the third time I've tried to put this in SUA SPONTE, so maybe if I say I don't want it in the guest book, then this time they will put it in...go figure? As saying YES it didn't show up...glitch in system?!?!

I just got a letter for 100% permanent & total VA Disability dated 10/9/03 and call to the VA today indicated they will take it back to August 2003. Funny I entered this once before a day or so ago and it didn't show up? Must be a glitch in message pickup date? Anyway it will really come in handy now financially since I got medically retired from State of Florida after 26 years and that only pays $754 per month after they take out health insurance for $290 per month for medicine the Tampa VA will not give me for Service Connected Migraine Headaches. My second wife, Bree, survived the surgery but I think she must have had a stroke or a blood clot from her extremities go to her brain because she is not thinking rationally and moved in with her youngest daughter and may but most likely will not return to me, maybe ever. I go to Mass almost every day and pray for her and me but it seems GOD wants something different for me now! Our LORD is a jealous GOD and I think he doesn't want us to LOVE anyone or anything as much as HIM! I LOVE BREE like BREATH ITSELF & Jesus it HURTS! WHY? Her daughter is afraid of me which is BULLSHIT because I'm a great big TEDDY BEAR...I just don't speak like or think like whatever NORMAL is supposed to be! I talk like I'm still in the bloody jungle most of the time, whatever is inside comes out without screening for audience mostly. I'm a nice guy but talk rough.

I received a courtesy copy of Sua Sponte, thank you, I will be joining up real soon.  Anyway, I remember going to the funeral we staged at the Division Chapel for Sgt Angell, I didn't know Angell well, but he spoke to us when he was in the rear.  We were the Recondo Class of#7-68. I remember the spit shine boots at a 45 degree angle the black beret and M-16 with bayonet muzzle end down. Steve Franklin and I went to the chapel to pay our respect to a fine Ranger. June or July 1968 standing on the beach and watching the rucksacks being kicked off the slick in front of the orderly room as the chopper hovered at twenty feet kicking up sand and dust.  It woke me up as to the job I was getting myself into.  But that was thirty some years ago. When I got the Sua Sponte Newsletter and I saw Angell's face it got me brothers. This isn't a good old boys club but something more.  We who survived the war hold in memory our fallen brothers and in a sense live with us daily by what we think, say, and do. Sergeant Angell lives on in me and for that matter in you as Lrrp Rangers.

Hello
I'm military collector and reenactor from Poland. I have a question: how looked your A-class uniform when you served in Vietnam? Was worn black beret and jump boots to A-class uniform (like Green Berets)? Which patches were worn on shoulder? Maybe you have any photo?
I be very thankful for you help.
Best regards

Thank you one and all that have been praying for me (56) , my wife (69), "Bree", my step-daughter (50) (deceased), Michelle Susan DeWald. I am so glad I reached out to my old LRRP buddies/RANGERS/LRS/Special Forces members retired & active duty.

My step-daughters funeral is in Dallas, Texas 1PM 8/30/03 and I am having a bagpiper play "Amazing Grace" at her graveside. She gave it her all and was my wife's best friend. My wife has surgery the first week in September to remove a 5 inch by 4 inch tumor plus part of colon, part of bladder, and a kidney at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

I will be retired medically 9/30/03 after 28 years service to the state of Florida starting 4/9/1973. I worked as a Parole Officer, Prison Counselor, Sergeant in FSP, Probation Officer, and finally as an Employment Counselor for Disabled Veterans since 8/1986(DVOP). In addition I worked as a jewelry benchman, psychiatric counselor to children & adolescents, welder, golf course greenskeeper going back to 1964 thru 2003. I will be staying home taking care of my disabled wife.

Again thank you SINCERELY for the prayers, e-mails, telephone calls in my time of need. This is what it means to be a RANGER...you don't forget your brothers and their families as we fight the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Remember "Nil Desperandum Auspice Deo" and Philippians Chapter #4 verses 8&9 when you think of me and my wife, "Bree," and my family as we pray for you!  Especially:  Tom Nash, Mike Inman, Brigadier General Mark Brennan (recent e-mails & telecons) and Justin Stay. First I wanted to touch base with everyone.  Bubbles, how you doing?  Sorry buddy, I didn't get your pictures, some error or something?

FOR YOUR INFO: I wrote the US President, about the tab issue for all.  It was turned over to the US Army Awards and Decorations Branch.  A Female LTC, at Awards & Decor gave me the brush off.  I turned the entire kit and Kabootal over to Mike Chu, I'm done with it.  I have come to the conclusion that much work has to be done before the next Ranger Tab board meets at Ft Benning. The problem is wording.  (Provisional) LRRP status no action-why? inactivation in 1967, carried forward as DA LRP Company & Detachments.  The status of the Companies can not carry as 75TH (Ranger) Infantry. Companies were Deactivated and returned to separate Infantry Regiment i.e. 50TH 51ST, 58TH, 71ST etc as long as it is a part of a different regiment. Some Long Range Patrol Detachments incorporated into 75TH (Ranger) Infantry minus Infantry Regiment.  Historically makes reference to LRP assets to form Ranger Companies A-P.  1 January, 1969 75TH RGR INF identifies LRRP/LRP as RANGER as Proper title for Long Range Reconnaissance, and Long Range Patrol Soldiers.  Lineage from LRP to RANGER can not be established under official Army channel "DA Heraldry Office" due to separate Infantry regiment, intergrading two regiments can not be granted, with the exception of LRP Detachments detached from Infantry Regiments that makes reference to assets or Linkage to historical likeness as special skill units such as Special Reconnaissance Army Units.

How the Korean War Ranger Companies and the WWII Ranger Battalions were granted lineage to the 75TH RANGER Regiment. Once the 75TH Became a Force-sized unit a difference was establish from 75TH Ranger Infantry (CARS) becoming a full Ranger Regiment or Force it can accommodate transferring the Battalions, Companies from the Special Forces & the Safe keeper unit to be used as assets both active and inactive, this was done by raising the Regiment Headquarters like in WWII. "Assets" were LRRP/LRP equipment and personnel, not the lineage of the 51ST Infantry.  That is why the LRRP/LRP personnel gave up Lurp for Ranger as a proper title.  The US Army will never and have never recognized LRRP/LRP or Lurp as a soldier's proper title.  But on the other hand Ranger was established as the correct title officially in 1776, 1862, 1942, 1950, 1969.  Therefore, Rangers perform Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) missions.  Even if the soldier has never jumped from an airplane and the unit is identified as Airborne capable the soldier will wear the Airborne tab with the command patch because the LRRP/RANGER Co is identified Airborne, even if the brigade/division is non-Airborne.  The Ranger tab board says when we get the history, linkage to track then maybe "LINEAGE" can be granted from the Secretary of the Army.  Without that being accomplished, we as Rangers, will not be granted the wear of the "Official" 75TH RANGER RGT. Do not be satisfied with the Company scroll because a company will never be authorized a DSI scroll.  At present time Vietnam Era Rangers are only authorized the 196TH Inf Bde or Americal Division Patch with Airborne tab. The black or tan Commando beret can not be officially worn unless you are a member of A, B, C, E, H (Ranger) Companies those units are recognized has having lineage to the present day 75TH Ranger Regiment.  The rest were put in the inactive file.  For answers to questions you may have on this issue E-mail me GUNNER.

Jammin' Jarhead -

Sorry that I couldn't say so-long to you at Angel Fire when the Memorial Ceremony was over and everyone was preparing to begin their journey home. It was great to see you, and I'm sure that we'll cross paths again. Take care, and Peace be with you.

Anyone remember around 27 Feb 69. The night LZ Baldy was hit on the LRRP side of the hill? I was the kid that used the LAW against the bunker behind LRRP site. Kid then that is.. I volunteered to come over from F/17 that night and stayed for awhile. Learned a lot from you guy's. Still use some of it today being a SWAT Instructor in Michigan and at the police academy. Would like to hear from anyone at that time.

From time to time, I pull up the website to see what is happening.  This time I was reading about Vic Valeriano and his acceptance into the Ranger Hall of Fame.  I didn't know Vic, in the Company in Vietnam, but, I certainly knew of him and his accomplishments as an Infantry soldier and as a Ranger of the 196TH LRRP Det (Abn)(Prov), Det(A) LRRP 23RD Inf (Prov) and Co E (LRP)51ST Inf, 75TH Ranger Inf (CARS).  I feel great pride due to the fact that Vic was in the company and the fact that he is an Islander.  I can identify with that because of my mother being an Islander as well.

With that said, I wish Vic his due.  Congratulations are in order and an honor which is fitting of his stature.  To the others of the early formation of this company, especially Dave Travis. Being a part of the Ranger Community has always been with the LRRPs.  It was decided so in 1958.  Assets, such as LRRP personnel to form the 75TH Ranger Infantry CARS had been addressed in 1956,1958-1961, 1965-1967 and was approved on 28 December 1968 officially affected on 1 January, 1969.  Therefore, LRRPs are Rangers and proof was first seen in a unit called "Church's Ranging Men" (Church's Rangers) the year 1678. Rangers came from Ranging men and Long Ranging Reconnaissance Patrols (LRRP) Knowlton's Rangers 1776. We as LRRPs never operated as Battalions but certainly operated exactly like Ranger Companies of the Korean War.  The Battalion operations would not being until 1974 under re-organization into the 1ST and 2ND Ranger Battalions.  Our Regiment's history did not start with us as a company or Detachment, but as the 5307TH Composite and the OSS.  We just made the 75TH Infantry (Airborne) from our combined assets as Airborne units.  Again, Congratulations Vic, a well deserved Award.

Found the site with no compass just kept looking. Just wanted to say hello to all the warriors from G Co Rangers. I kinda stay lost in my own world as there is no team like what we all had in Nam. I keep my back to the wall and it's getting very old. Would like to hear from some of you if you get the time to answer. If anyone sees Beach say hello. That goes for everyone but brother Beach was always out of touch and on the far edge of the map if you know what I mean. Wishing all of you the best and smooth thoughts. Pervert
